Plain weave all-wool cloth, used largely for men's wear. Woven from soft yarns and well felted. The face is smooth and soft. Piece-dyed in dark shades. For coatings the cloth is a popular one as it wears well. Thibets are also made in an 8-shaft weave, 711/2-in. wide, 40 ends and 40 picks per inch, 20-oz. per yard and 15-oz. per yard finished. The warp has about 20 per cent of cotton, and weft 15 per cent of cotton mixed with wool. -

The term is also applied to a lustre fabric woven with a cotton warp and alpaca wool weft, plain weave. When dyed in solid colours it is cross-dyed, the cotton warp being dyed before weaving, and the piece is piece-dyed after leaving the loom. The warp is usually 2/80's Egyptian. The true alpaca is a long, white or coloured smooth hair obtained from the Auchenia paco of South America (see Alpaca Wool)Dictionary of the English textile terms > Alpaca (Extract Wool)
